Tulsi-Ayurvedic Herb 🌱

Ocimum tenuiflorumĀ (synonymĀ Ocimum sanctum), commonly known asĀ holy basilĀ orĀ tulsi, is an aromaticĀ perennial plant in the family Lamiaceace. It is native to theĀ Indian subcontinent and widespread as a cultivated plant throughout theĀ Southeast Asiantropics.

TulsiĀ is cultivated for religious andĀ traditional medicineĀ purposes, and also for itsĀ essential oil. It is widely used as aĀ herbal tea, commonly used inĀ Ayurveda, and has a place within theĀ VaishnavaĀ tradition ofĀ Hinduism, in which devotees perform worship involving holy basil plants or leaves.

The variety ofĀ Ocimum tenuiflorumĀ used in Cambodian andĀ Thai cuisineĀ is referred to asĀ Thai holy basilĀ (Thai:Ā ąøąø°ą¹€ąøžąø£ąø²Ā kaphrao) or (Khmer:Ā įž˜įŸ’įžšįŸ‡įž–įŸ’įžšįŸ…Ā mreah-pruv);Ā it is not the same asĀ Thai basilĀ or Chi neang vorng, which is a variety ofĀ Ocimum basilicum.

TulsiĀ is a sacred plant forĀ HindusĀ and is worshipped as the avatar ofĀ Lakshmi.Ā TulsiĀ leaves are part of the worship ofĀ VishnuĀ and hisĀ avatarsĀ and some other deities, including Krishna andĀ Rama, and other maleĀ VaishnavaĀ deities, such asĀ HanumanĀ and some brahmanas. Traditionally,Ā tulsiĀ is planted in the center of the centralĀ courtyardĀ of Hindu houses or may be grown next to Hanuman temples. There is also a variant, known asĀ Shyam Tulsi, which is slightly darker (purplish-green) in shade.

The ritual lighting of lamps each evening duringĀ KartikĀ includes the worship of theĀ tulsiĀ plant, which is held to be auspicious for the hindus.Vaishnavas traditionally useĀ Hindu prayer beadsĀ made fromĀ tulsiĀ stems or roots, which are an important symbol of initiation. They have such a strong association with Vaishnavas, that followers of Vishnu are known as “those who bear theĀ tulsiĀ round the neck”.

Tulsi VivahĀ is a ceremonial festival performed anytime betweenĀ Prabodhini EkadashiĀ (the 11th or 12th lunar day of the bright fortnight of theĀ Hindu monthĀ ofĀ Kartik) andĀ Kartik PoornimaĀ (the full moon of the month). The day varies regionally.
